Just read an article called Life without technology: getting off the grid, and the author poses some really great ideas to think about. It’s a little old, but still relevant: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2009396165_sirota29.html
Favorite quote, “We don’t, however, consider the psychological and societal consequences of the revolution’s radical notion that always being connected and available is a necessity.”
Love. It. I think about this sort of thing daily. I’m not much of a television watcher, and I hate that I check my mail about twenty times a day. I feel proud that I can say I don’t have facebook, but I still sit and wait by my cell phone like its my job.
I thought about how things might have been in the fifties, where studying, entertainment, and information gathering was primarily found on paper or in person. Part of me feels like I’d be ten times happier in such a setting, the other side is hesitant. Perhaps that’s the side that is addicted to technology.
The problem here is that what I’m addicted to is also making me quite unhappy. I want to get off the grid, but with work, parents, and grad schools relaying on digital communication… I fear my dream cannot be fulfilled until a later date.
I can, however, take it down a notch. When all these papers and applications are completed, I’m taking a simpler path. This next semester is going to be a no school time, which leaves me a window of opportunity to relax from the technology world. I’ll check my email once a day, enter a blog once a week, have my phone on silent throughout the day, and entertain myself away from televisions and computers.
I can’t wait for the amount of art I’ll be able to produce, the nature I’ll be able to enjoy, and the books I’ll be able to revisit.
In a week, I’m going semi-off the grid. And I couldn’t be happier.
